Can you explain your club terminology?
Practice groups: This is who your child will PRACTICE with on a weekly basis.
-Advanced group - Our highest level wrestlers. Typically 3+ years of experience of wrestling
-Beginner group - Our lowest level / youngest wrestlers. Typically grades K-2 in their 1st or second year of wrestling
-Intermediate group - Everyone else. Typically grades 2-8 in their 1st through 3rd year of wrestling
Competition groups: This is the team your child will COMPETE with at matches. All matches are part of the Jersey Shore Junior Wrestling League.
-DEVO - Short for developmental team. This is for our newer wrestlers and/or wrestlers who have not yet made a Jersey Shore competitive travel team.
-Wall 1 - Our highest level travel team. Currently competing in the Jersey Shore "A" Division. Sometimes referred to as the A Team.
-Wall 2 - Our medium level travel team. Currently competing in the Jersey Shore "B" Division. Sometimes referred to as the B Team.
-Wall 3 - Our lowest level travel team. Currently competing in the Jersey Shore "C" Division. Sometimes referred to as the C Team.
The confusing part:
The Advanced practice group is comprised mostly of wrestlers that compete on our Wall 1 & 2 teams.
The Beginner practice group wrestlers all compete together in DEVO.
The Intermediate group is a combination of DEVO as well as newer/younger wrestlers who compete on our Wall 2 & Wall 3 teams.
What should wrestlers bring for practice and matches?
One of the most common questions new wrestling parents ask is what should my son/daughter bring for their first wrestling practice. Wrestlers will need wrestling shoes, head gear, athletic shorts, a t-shirt and bottle of water for practice. For matches, wrestlers should have their wrestling shoes, head gear, athletic shorts, t-shirt, water bottle and a singlet (The Wall Knights Wrestling Club will provide wrestlers with a singlet during the season).
Can you please explain more about the developmental (DEVO) team?
DEVO is the term used by the Jersey Shore Junior Wrestling League for the Developmental League. The Jersey Shore Junior Wrestling League understands that not all wrestlers participating in area programs can make the JSJWL starting rosters. DEVO provides youth wrestlers the opportunity to compete against wrestlers from area teams in which wrestlers are matched up according to weight, age, and wrestling experience. DEVO events do not keep track of team scores and it provides young wrestlers the chance to develop their experience and skills in competition without having the pressure of a team score involved. Coaches for opposing DEVO teams communicate prior to the events to attempt to match wrestlers up in matches that will be competitive and fun for the participants.
For Wall DEVO, we put a roster of wrestlers together prior to the first DEVO match. We take weights of the wrestlers and then include their Name, Age, Weight, and DEVO Ranking on a spreadsheet. The DEVO coordinator for the club matches kids up with DEVO wrestlers from the opposing program based on size, weight, and ability. DEVO is the perfect introduction to the sport because it gives coaches control over matchups. DEVO does not cost any money to participate in (Your registration fee at the beginning of the year covers it). We only request that once a wrestler is on our DEVO roster they attend all DEVO matches. If they can not make a match, it must be communicated to the coaches and/or DEVO coordinator.
What is the Jersey Shore Junior Wrestling League (JSJWL)?
The Jersey Shore Junior Wrestling League is the league that the Wall Knights Travel teams compete in. The JSJWL has three Divisions. The Wall Knights 1 team is in the "A" Division with other area teams, the Wall Knights 2 team is in the "B" Division with other area teams, and the Wall Knights 3 Team is in the "C" Division with other area teams. The Designated Weight Classes to fill a team roster for a JSJWL team include 52 lbs, 56 lbs, 60 lbs, 64 lbs, 68 lbs, 72 lbs, 76 lbs, 80 lbs, 85 lbs, 90 lbs, 95 lbs, 100 lbs, 107 lbs, 114 lbs, 122 lbs, 132 lbs, 145 lbs, 160 lbs, and Hwt.
To make one of the Wall Knights travel team rosters may require a wrestle off with another Wall Knights wrestler of the same weight and the winner of the wrestle off will represent the Wall Knights in JSJWL matches at the weight class. See the JSJWL website for further details about the League at www.jsjwl.org.
To be eligible to wrestle for a Wall JSJWL Travel team, wrestlers must be registered for the Wall Knights Wrestling Club. Wrestlers must also attend a minimum of one practice per week with the club (It is preferable that wrestlers make all practices). Wrestlers must reside in Wall Township or one of the neighboring towns that is not zoned in a high school district with a Jersey Shore Junior Wrestling League program. The age range of wrestlers that wrestle in the league is from 5yrs - No older than 15 yrs before October 1 of the upcoming season. The league has rules in place including the report card rule to ensure that teams compete with integrity and do not attempt to recruit from outside towns
